Nashville Cars and Coffee

Cars and Coffee is every Sat. from 8-10:30am at the Carmike Cinemas Parking lot in Franklin, TN. The first Sat. of the month is “exotic” Cars and Coffee.

Don’t forget to bring your folding chair so you can eat and just take a load off.

Nashville Cars and Coffee

There are two items of consideration that everyone needs to keep in mind;

1) There are no trash receptacles in the Carmike Theater parking lot, so it will be each person’s responsibility to make sure that they pick up their coffee cup, biscuit wrappers, napkins and other forms of trash and dispose of the refuse in the proper location. The demise of most Cars and Coffee events has been due to trash and what kind of condition the parking lot has been left in after the Cars and Coffee.

2) Driving onto and exiting the parking lot – PLEASE DRIVE SLOW AND RESPONSIBLY! The second reason for the demise of Cars and Coffee events has been how participants drive into and out of the Cars and Coffee site. As mentioned before “testosterone and horse power is a dangerous mix”. Please enter the parking lot slowly, drive through the parking lot slowly and exit the parking lot slowly. Once you have left the parking lot and are on Frasier Drive, continue to drive appropriately. If you feel the “need for speed” and to “throttle up”, please at least wait till you are a mile away from the parking lot before you do anything. We do not want that activity to be associated with the Cars and Coffee event.

3) LEAVE YOUR DOG AT HOME!!!!

First Saturday of the Month: Remember that the first Saturday of each month is the Exotic Car Saturday.

The admins of this event do not support reckless and dangerous driving behavior in or outside of Cars and Coffee.

HRR October Driving Tour – Cheekwood Is Calling

Cheekwood wants old cars. This is a tour for OLD IRON! It’s short not many curves, minimal hills, etc, so get your treasure out of the shed.

This will be a little different from most of our tours but should be lots of fun. Cheekwood is providing us with 50 free admissions that day (regular admission is $20 for adults and $18 for seniors) for displaying between 11:00 and 1:00. You are welcome to stay and tour their beautiful gardens as long as you like. Fee admissions will be limited to two per car. Since we are receiving the free admissions because we are displaying old cars the free admissions will first be given to those with old cars (twenty five years old or older; 2018 minus 25 equals 1993 or older). Cheekwood would really appreciate some cars from the 1920s and 1930s. If we don’t have enough old cars and passengers to use the 50 free admissions the remainder will go to those driving newer cars.

Newer cars and guests will be given priority by when they confirmed a reservation for the day! Free admissions priority will also go first to HRR members first and then to guests.

Cheekwood will be having a special day celebrating Landscape Architect Bryant Fleming Day (he designed the gardens at Cheekwood). That day they will have an architectural crowd that will be there for that event. They believe our old/antique cars will be of great interest to these people.  This Celebration will also offer some more activities for our HRR AACA group to enjoy while at Cheekwood. More information at https://cheekwood.org/calendar/bryant-fleming-day/.

Since we will be there during the lunch hour you are welcome to pack a picnic basket and eat on the lawn next to your car or order food from the Food Trucks which will be nearby. Cheekwood will also provide a meeting room for those who would rather eat inside or just in case we do have rain that day.

PLEASE NOTIFY DICK FLEENER AT rfleener@comcast.net or 615-624-3724 AS SOON AS YOU ARE SURE YOU WILL ATTEND. Free Admission into Cheekwood will be prioritized by how soon you Register and the age of your car. This is a rain or shine event. When you confirm please also let him know what model and year of car you will be driving that day.

HRR August Driving Tour

Coffee and Donuts will be served from 7:45 AM till start of tour.  We’ll be leaving the Collins’s Loafer’s Cabin (3511 Memorial, Murfreesboro, TN) at 9:00 AM and taking another awesome route planned by our own Russ Barnes, and his co-pilot Pat!

Our first stop will be to visit the private collection of Mr. David Pennington in Tullahoma TN.   Mr. Pennington is a past two term Coffee County Mayor and also the owner of the Jiffy Burger restaurant in Manchester for the past fifty years.  If you’ve had the pleasure of ever eating at the Jiffy Burger and remember all the collectibles in the place, then you’ll have an idea of what he has at home.  He says he “has 20,000 square foot of stuff crammed into a 5,000 square Foot building”.  Among the collection are cars, pedal cars, gas pumps, oil cans, signs, marble balls, clocks, stereoscopes, photographs, paintings, Civil War items, masks, a phone booth and even an entire wall from a building which used to be located in Manchester. I can also tell you that it was enough for the Pickers from Antique Archaeology on the History Channel to come see him!

Then we will be having lunch at Damron’s Restaurant in Tullahoma.  I’ve talked to the owner Gloria Damron, and she is excited to have us come and eat at their place!   They normally close on Saturdays at 1:00, but will stay open for as long as we need.  Meat, Two Vegetables, Drink, Desert, Tip and Tax included $11.00, WOW GREAT.
After lunch we will be visiting the Beechcraft Heritage Museum in Tullahoma.   They will be providing tour guides for us and they are going to give our group a discount. The entry fee will be $6.00 CASH for under 65, and $5.00 CASH for over 65.  It is a world class and distinctly original aviation museum, and is committed to promoting aviation education and preserving the heritage nurtured by generations of enthusiasts of all Beechcraft models from 1932 through the present. The Museum has a picturesque campus style setting adjacent to the Tullahoma Municipal Airport.  It is a blend of authentically restored early American log structures and modern museum quality construction.  Normally it is a 60,000 square foot facility housing more than 35 aircraft in addition to, many original historical artifacts and treasures.  At present, one building is under renovation, so the collection is down to about twenty airplanes, including Travel Airs, Staggerwings, Beech 18’s, Bonanzas, Barons, Starship, Duke and many other aircraft ranging from 1924 to 1994.

This tour would not have been so fun without the help of our local Tullahoma HR&R member Vicki Qualls!  Thank You Vicki!

February HRR Driving Tour – Corvette Museum

Honk, Rattle and Roll members, on February 18th we are taking one of the most unique tours in years. Guy Wilson had made the arrangements for a guided tour, private presentation and lunch at one of the premier car museums in the Southeast – The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.  As you may know, the museum suffered a floor collapse in 2014, broadcast over national news, but it has been rebuilt, along with several of the cars.

Guy has made the preliminary details for lunch, private meeting with a member of the staff the museum and a tour with assistance from their staff. This is beyond the normal do-it-yourself collection of an amateur memorabilia that we typically experience.

In our private meeting with their team we will learn about the destroyed and damaged cars and what has been done to return to the worldwide attraction it was before. This will be a private presentation for us during our luncheon buffet meal of Marinated Chicken Breasts, Yukon Gold Baby Baker’s Potatoes, a Vegetable Medley and Tossed Salad with choice of Ranch or Light Italian Dressing. After lunch, and over desert of Apple Cobbler, a member of the museum staff will provide details of what to look for in the museum. Once the discussion is concluded the tour will begin.

This being a major professional facility, the guidelines are a little more structured than our normal relaxed tours.  Their organization requires that we confirm our reservations by a certain date and Guy will personally prepay for the number of attendees. After that we will NOT BE ABLE TO ADD PARTICIPANTS. Please look at your calendars to join us and LET US KNOW NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 1st. Russ Barnes is developing the route on Highway 231 to Bowling Green and will have NO INTERSTATES so if the weather is inclement we will not be taking the normal hilly, curvy back roads.

Because of the quality of the facility, the overhead for their staff to guide us, a separate room for dining and the coordination of their team, the cost for both the tour and the lunch is a little higher than our normal, but who among you hasn’t driven by the museum and not said to yourself; “Someday I will stop there”. The all-inclusive package is $25 per person, which we will collect Saturday morning the 18th at the Collins “Loafers Glory” lodge. (Cash or check only). REMEMBER YOU MUST REGISTER WITH TOM BY FEBRUARY 1st.  UNLIKE OTHER TOURS THERE WILL BE NO LAST MINUTE SIGN UPS.
